For many young South Africans, going to university or a TVET college is a dream. But the cost of studying can make that dream difficult for families who cannot afford tuition, accommodation and other study expenses.
This is where the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) can help eligible students.
NSFAS provides financial support to qualifying students studying at public universities and TVET colleges. Depending on the student’s circumstances and the applicable funding rules, support can include tuition and registration costs as well as certain allowances.
But getting NSFAS funding is not automatic. Students need to apply correctly, provide the right information and keep checking their application.
Do You Qualify for NSFAS?
Before applying, students should check the requirements for the relevant academic year.
NSFAS requirements can include:
- Being a South African citizen or meeting the applicable residency requirements.
- Meeting the required household income criteria.
- Studying or planning to study an approved qualification at a public university or TVET college.
- Meeting the academic and other funding requirements.
Students receiving certain SASSA grants may qualify under specific financial eligibility rules, but they still need to complete the NSFAS application process.
Students with disabilities may also qualify for funding under specific conditions.
Because NSFAS rules can change, students should always check the latest requirements on the official NSFAS website before applying.
Get Your Documents Ready
One of the easiest ways to avoid delays is to prepare your documents before starting the application.
Depending on your circumstances, you may need:
- Your South African ID or other accepted identification documents.
- IDs of your parents, guardian or spouse, where applicable.
- Proof of household income, where required.
- Required NSFAS consent forms.
- Additional documents if you have a disability or qualify under a special category.
Make sure your documents are clear and easy to read.
A blurry photograph or missing page can cause unnecessary delays.
How to Apply
Step 1: Create Your myNSFAS Account
Go to the official NSFAS website and create your myNSFAS account.
Use your own cellphone number and email address. Make sure you can access both because NSFAS may send important messages, verification requests or updates to these details.
Step 2: Complete the Application
Fill in your personal, family and education information carefully.
Take your time and check everything before submitting.
A small mistake in your ID number or other important information could cause problems with your application.
Step 3: Upload Your Documents
Upload the documents requested by NSFAS.
Make sure they are clear, complete and uploaded in the correct sections.
Do not upload documents that are cut off, difficult to read or incorrect.
Step 4: Submit Your Application
Before pressing the final Submit button, check your information one more time.
After submitting, keep your confirmation or reference details somewhere safe.
This can help you track your application later.
Don’t Forget to Check Your Application
Submitting your application is not the end of the process.
Students should regularly log into their myNSFAS account to check for updates.
NSFAS may ask you to provide additional documents or information. If this happens, respond as soon as possible and follow the deadline shown on your account.
Ignoring a request can delay your application.
NSFAS and University Applications Are Different
Students should remember that applying for NSFAS does not mean they have automatically applied to university or a TVET college.
You must apply separately to the institution where you want to study.
It is important to follow both processes and keep track of your admission and NSFAS applications.
Be Careful of Scammers
NSFAS applications should be completed through official channels.
Be careful of people who ask you for money and promise to guarantee NSFAS funding.
Never give strangers your password, PIN or OTP.
If someone claims they can guarantee your funding because they have “connections”, be suspicious.
Your Future Starts With Preparation
For many students, financial support can make the difference between being able to study and having to put their education on hold.
But students also have a responsibility to make sure their applications are accurate and complete.
Prepare your documents early, provide honest information, check your myNSFAS account regularly and respond quickly when information is requested.
Most importantly, always check the latest NSFAS rules and requirements for the year you are applying.
A successful application starts with being prepared.
