Johannesburg, South Africa – The streets of Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD) are increasingly under scrutiny as residents and business owners raise alarms over the state of cleanliness. Litter, dust, and debris have become a growing concern in one of Africa’s busiest urban centers.
Local business owner Thabo Mokoena described the situation as “distracting and damaging” to the city’s image. “The dirt isn’t just unsightly—it affects our businesses and even discourages tourists from visiting,” he said.
Several factors contribute to the CBD’s cleanliness challenges. High pedestrian traffic, irregular street cleaning, overflowing bins, and ongoing construction have all compounded the problem. Informal traders operating on busy sidewalks add to the accumulation of waste, making street hygiene a persistent struggle.
The City of Johannesburg has pledged to step up its cleaning efforts. Recent initiatives include increasing the frequency of street sweeps, installing additional waste bins, and coordinating with local businesses to ensure proper waste disposal practices.
Environmental analyst Naledi Khumalo stressed that tackling urban dirt is a shared responsibility. “Citizens must be mindful of where they discard their waste, while city authorities need to provide efficient cleaning systems. Both sides have to work together for meaningful change,” she said.
Despite the challenges, city officials remain optimistic. “Johannesburg CBD can be clean and vibrant, but it requires sustained effort from everyone—residents, businesses, and municipal authorities alike,” a spokesperson from the city’s waste management department stated.
As Johannesburg continues to develop as a financial and cultural hub, maintaining cleanliness in the CBD is critical—not only for public health, but also for tourism, investment, and the city’s global reputation.
