A 34-year-old man from Limpopo, who has chosen to remain anonymous, is beginning a new chapter in his life after successfully completing a rehabilitation programme at the Limpopo Anti-Drugs, Gangsterism and Crime (LADGAG) Rehabilitation Centre. Once trapped in addiction and living on the streets for more than five years, he now hopes to rebuild his life, strengthen family bonds, and one day start a family of his own.

Life on the Streets

The man’s struggle began when drug dependency forced him to flee his family home. What followed were years of homelessness, marked by instability and repeated failed attempts at recovery. Despite his family’s continued efforts to bring him home and provide support, his addiction repeatedly pulled him back onto the streets.

He passed through several rehabilitation centres during this period, but none brought lasting change. Frustration and emotional distress often led to anger and resistance whenever he was encouraged to stay and complete treatment.

“I used to think my life was over,” he said. “But deep inside, I still dreamed of working, getting married, and having a loving family one day.”

A Turning Point Through LADGAG

Hope arrived unexpectedly when his brother came across the LADGAG Rehabilitation Centre on TikTok. Although the centre was initially at full capacity, persistence paid off, and he was eventually admitted. He spent six months at the facility under the guidance of Mr Moloto and the dedicated LADGAG team.

“The first few months were extremely difficult,” he recalled. “I was angry and constantly argued with my brother over the phone. I wanted to leave. But as time passed, something changed in me.”

Recovery Through Support and Structure

The rehabilitation programme offered structure, discipline, and emotional support. Through daily routines, counselling, soccer activities, and church programmes, he slowly began to heal and regain control of his life.

These activities helped restore his sense of purpose and belonging. With consistent guidance and encouragement from staff, he learned healthier coping mechanisms and developed a renewed sense of self-worth.

Today, he describes himself as a changed man, focused on staying sober and building a meaningful future.

Gratitude and a Message of Hope

“I am deeply grateful to Mr Moloto and the entire LADGAG team for their love, patience, and support,” he said. “They believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.”

He also shared a message for families affected by addiction. “Never give up on your loved ones. Recovery is possible. There is always hope.”

A Story That Inspires Change

This powerful journey highlights the importance of family support, perseverance, and access to effective rehabilitation programmes. As substance abuse continues to affect many communities across Limpopo and South Africa, stories like this serve as a reminder that recovery is achievable and that a new beginning is always within reach.
